WIZARD'S ARENA -- RELEASE 1.31 (C) Copyright 1991 by Douglas Summers UPGRADING FROM OLDER VERSIONS There are a LOT of major changes between 1.13 and this release; in summary: * Configuration is now done via a CONFIG.WA file * Daily maintenance can now be run as a standalone (for example, during your BBS's nightly mail runs) * The '?' command has changed somewhat * A fair number of bug fixes * New weapons! (slings and crossbows) * New monsters! (Orcs and Ogres) * New spells! * New configuration options Upgrading from an older version of WIZARD'S ARENA is pretty easy. Just run WA-UTIL.EXE in the directory that your databases are in; they'll be quickly upgraded to the latest format. If you're upgrading to 1.27 or later, and have a copy of DAY.EXE or UPGRADE.EXE, you can just erase them. You shouldn't use them, as their functions are subsumed in WA-UTIL.EXE. It is vitally necessary that you block anyone from trying to run the game while you're running WA-UTIL. If someone enters the game while the program is running, you'll almost certainly destroy the databases. WA-UTIL will show that it is "Upgrading from 1.xx to 1.xx", and will work its way to the current version. Don't be alarmed if there are several. This will generate a CONFIG.WA file for you, if you don't already have one. The game no longer accepts command-line parameters for configuration, so edit the CONFIG.WA file to reflect the customization options you want. Of course, if you aren't registered, these will be limited. DON'T UNZIP DATABASE.ZIP. It's got virgin databases in it, and it'll overwrite your current maps. Keep it around, anyway; if you need to start the game over, just unzip it and voila! a new game. You can delete the old GENERIC.SYS, if you like -- the newer version of the game uses the DOOR.SYS file instead. ---------------------------------- UPGRADING FROM BEFORE VERSION 1.26 ---------------------------------- If you're a registered user, set a line in CONFIG.WA to something like MAGICPROB = 500 This will cause 5% of all items dropped during daily maintenance to be enchanted. The value can be set anywhere from 0 (which means no items will be enchanted) to 10000 (which means they all will be). If you use the DAY program to perform daily maintenance off-line make sure to change your batch file to use WA-UTIL instead.
